Conversational Apologetics | Helping People Think: Guiding Conversations with Grace
Season 2, Episode 129
In this episode, Michael and Zach continue their series on conversational apologetics by introducing the third question in Gregory Koukl’s Columbo Tactic: “Have you considered...?” While the first two Columbo questions help Christians understand what another person believes and why, the third gently introduces a new perspective and invites that person to evaluate the consistency of their own ideas.
Drawing from examples such as Paul at Mars Hill, Paul before King Agrippa, Jesus before Pilate, and Nathan’s confrontation of David, the discussion shows how Scripture frequently leads people toward truth through thoughtful questions rather than immediate correction. Michael and Zach also examine the importance of defining terms, recognizing who carries the burden of proof, and allowing people to discover weaknesses in their own reasoning without humiliation or hostility.
Along the way, they apply the Columbo method to common claims about judgment, miracles, love, truth, and Christianity. The episode emphasizes that these questions must arise from genuine curiosity and love rather than manipulation or a desire to trap someone. The goal is not always to secure immediate agreement, but often to plant a seed, leave someone thinking, and trust the Holy Spirit to use a faithful conversation over time.
