Interview with Charles Smits | Faith, Family, and Finding a Place in Theatre

Season 2, Episode 132

In this episode, Michael and Zach sit down with Charles Smits to discuss his Lowcountry roots, Christian education, homeschooling, family, and unexpected journey into musical theatre. Charles reflects on growing up at Ferndale School, the strengths and challenges of different approaches to Christian education, and his wife Angela’s behind-the-scenes role as Head of Operations for House Theatre.

The conversation also explores how Charles entered theatre through the involvement of his daughters, what it was like joining his first musical as an adult, and how his perspective changed through productions of Little House on the Prairie and Annie. He shares his experience performing several roles in Annie, including President Franklin Roosevelt, and discusses the research, comedy, family memories, and spiritual community that shaped the production. The episode concludes with reflections on fathers participating alongside their children, the Christian mission of House Theatre, possible future roles, and Charles’s interest in launching a podcast of his own.
